Stellar Farmers Markets and Cornell Cooperative Extension

Stellar Farmers Markets

Greenmarket hosted the NYC Department of Health's Stellar Markets program at 9 Greenmarkets in 2015. This initiative promotes the benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and improves the capacity of New Yorkers to prepare healthy meals using locally grown, seasonal produce. Using the "Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables" curriculum, Stellar Farmers Market nutritionists provide free, comprehensive nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations at select farmers markets throughout NYC. Workshops include topics such as healthy eating, food resource management, food safety, and tips on saving money when food shopping.

Cornell Cooperative Extension

Staff and volunteers from Cornell Cooperative Extensions Farmers Market Nutrition Education Program perform cooking demonstrations at our markets using seasonal ingredients to encourage consumption of locally grown fruits and vegetables and promote proper use of FMNP checks. Their goals are to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables, motivate participants to purchase and increase their consumption of these foods, and promote both New York State growers and the farmers markets where they sell their products. Cornell regularly attended 4 markets in 2015.

On Monday, July 11, we launched the “Oh SNAP!” educational campaign with a live mural painting on a Greenmarket, Co. delivery truck. The “Oh SNAP!” campaign was designed to draw attention to the fact that GrowNYC’s network of Greenmarkets accept electronic benefits cards (EBT) and shoppers can use their SNAP benefits to purchase farm-fresh produce from the region’s mid-sized family farmers.
