Our Garden Projects

Since 1975, GrowNYC's Green Space program has built community gardens, green infrastructure systems, and other garden elements like raised beds, shade structures, and seating all across the five boroughs. Below are some recent examples of our projects:

In 2023, GrowNYC finished a multi-year garden build in Ridgewood, Queens on a long-standing vacant lot. This 10,000 sq. ft. space was built in partnership with NYC Parks GreenThumb and serves a community group of over 150 members. The garden contains over 30 raised beds for growing produce, a large pollinator meadow on a slope in the garden, an accessible pathway, and two gathering areas. A shade structure captures water in a 750-gallon rainwater harvesting tank to provide water for plants on site, while a three-bin compost systems helps process neighborhood waste.

In 2020, GrowNYC worked with NYC Parks GreenThumb to rebuild a 5,000 sq. ft. community garden in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Adjacent to a senior center and in a neighborhood lacking parks and green spaces, the garden serves as a shady oasis for the neighborhood and includes in-ground planting areas, tables and benches, an accessible pathway, and both traditional and accessible raised beds for growing plants.

In 2019, GrowNYC helped build a 20,000 sq. ft. community garden in a historic cemetery site in Woodside, Queens. We worked with the community group and volunteers to remove invasive weeds, build raised beds for growing produce and seating for community events, and garden storage space. The garden group continues to host a wide range of events for the community and donates a portion of the produce grown on site to a community fridge.
