Job Description and Responsibilities
Farmers’ Market Cheese Stand Manager Wanted
Do you love cheese? Do you have experience with food handling and customer service? Are you well-organized and a people person? Cato Corner Farm, a family-owned dairy farm making award-winning cheeses, is seeking a personable, motivated individual to lead our farmers’ market stand at the Union Square and Grand Army Plaza Greenmarkets.

*** We take our staff safety seriously. Markets are set up with spacing between staff and customers, contactless transactions, and reduced interaction (no sampling cheese) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff wear gloves and masks at all times. We will resume normal, more interactive sales process when it is safe to do so. ***

Primary responsibilities include:
At Union Square: 

  • Sell cheese at the busy Union Square NYC, Saturdays. The market takes place all year round and in all weather conditions.
  • Supervise two employees and lead our team.
  • Educate customers about our farm and our cheese. Represent our products and our philosophy to customers.
  • Set up and take down our market tent and displays.
  • Build business relationships with restaurant customers at the market.

At Grand Army Plaza: 

  • Sell cheese at the busy Grand Army Plaza market, Brooklyn, Saturdays.
  • Educate customers about our farm and our cheese. Represent our products and our philosophy to customers.

Days/times Required and Required Skills 
Union Square: 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. every Saturday at the Union Square Farmers’ Market (days are shorter in the winter)
Grand Army Plaza: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. every Saturday at the Union Square Farmers’ Market. Slightly shorter hours in the winter. Applicants should be available all year until at least Christmas 2020.

Pay Rate
Union Square: $16-18 / hour depending on experience
Grand Army Plaza: $14/hour

Experience and Skills

  • Applicants should be enthusiastic, intelligent, articulate, and flexible with excellent people skills.
  • Some knowledge of cheese and experience with food handling are important, as is a commitment to local, sustainable food.
  • Customer service is paramount; you must be able to maintain professionalism and poise while working efficiently under pressure.
  • Applicants should have some supervisory or team leading experience.
  • Good basic math skills are useful!
  • You will be on your feet for the entire shift and should be able to lift 50 lbs.

We are looking for individuals who can work with us at the markets in NYC. This position is usually one day or two a week. Saturday and/or Sunday Our mission is to regenerate the land by producing uncompromisingly delicious fresh and aged cheeses. We contribute to the local economy, to community health, and to the well-being of our ecosystem. We love growing and tending our herd of goats and working with Chaseholm Farm Creamery to make our cheeses. It means so much to us to be a steady part of one of the most important (and pleasurable) aspects of your life: FOOD!

Days/times Required and Required Skills
Must have good communication and organizational skills, have an interest in local/sustainable food, and work well in a fast-paced energetic, enthusiasm for goats and cheese specifically goat cheese a plus! Previous market or sales experience a plus but not required.
- Ability to meet physical demands of the job including standing for long periods of time, (normally 7am or 8am until 3-4pm) bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Responsibly handle a variety of payment methods, including cash and credit/debit cards (Square POS on tablet/phone).
- Weekend & some Holiday availability required.
- Flexibility in shift coverage to meet changing needs of business (i.e. working a different market location, special event days, etc.).
