GrowNYC Remembers Dr. Arline Bronzaft

October 30, 2025

GrowNYC joins so many across New York City in mourning the passing of Dr. Arline Bronzaft, a longtime member of our Board of Directors since 1984 and a steadfast advocate for a more livable city.

For decades, Dr. Bronzaft worked to bring attention to a vital yet often unseen environmental issue: noise pollution. Her research as a Professor at Lehman College (CUNY) demonstrated how chronic noise impacts learning, mental health, and overall well-being. She helped New Yorkers, and city leaders alike, recognize that sound is not just a part of the urban experience, but a matter of public health.

Her influence reached far beyond the classroom. Dr. Bronzaft’s expertise guided major policy efforts, including her contributions to the 2007 revision of the New York City Noise Code. She also co-authored Why Noise Matters (2011), a work that continues to shape global understanding of noise as an environmental concern.

We are deeply grateful for her years of service. Dr. Bronzaft’s legacy will continue to inspire our work toward a greener, healthier, and more peaceful New York City.
