Avian Flu Resources and Information

February 13, 2025

A message for GrowNYC Greenmarket, Farmstand, and wholesale customers:

We are closely monitoring the recent outbreak of avian influenza that has led to the culling of millions of chickens, ducks, and turkeys across the country, which has reduced the supply of eggs and increased demand for local eggs.

Our producers take precaution to ensure the safety of our food for our Greenmarket, Farmstand, and wholesale customers. GrowNYC takes every measure to ensure the quality and safety of the food sold and requires all producers to abide by health and safety regulations.

Transparency and traceability are the foundation of our mission to support regional farmers and to provide equitable access to the freshest, highest-quality foods to New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs. As a non-profit operator, GrowNYC does not dictate farmer prices. This is up to the discretion of individual farm businesses.

There are a number of things New Yorkers can always do to ensure that they safely consume eggs. We encourage food safety best practices such as: cooking eggs fully to 165°F, avoiding eating raw eggs, thoroughly washing your hands after handling eggs, and storing eggs in the refrigerator.

For additional tips on egg safety please read reliable third-party resources.
