Drawing on years of combined professional experience in the agricultural, legal, and marketing fields, FARMroots provides Greenmarket producers with a range of technical support programming designed to meet the needs of diversified farmers. Our two part approach provides business training to aspiring farmers while offering short-term project support and intensive technical assistance programs to established Greenmarket farmers. Using our unique knowledge of Greenmarket, the east coast’s largest marketplace, and the needs of small, diversified producers, we work to increase the long-term viability of participating producers.
The FARMroots program grew out of our New Farmer Development Project which targeted support to immigrants with agriculture experience and is now available to all of our Greenmarket farmer community of more than 230 producers. Our approach responds to the wide range of technical assistance needs identified by the Greenmarket producers who responded to a survey published in the report Farmers on the Edge co-published with Open Space Institute and with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

More seasoned Greenmarket farmers (3+ years experience) in need of longer-term assistance will be considered for FARMroots’ one-year intensive technical assistance program. Through ITAP, the FARMroots team performs a comprehensive analysis of our farmer-clients’ businesses to assess their most compelling needs, and then provides assistance both in-house and through referrals to various professionals.Farmers will be assisted by FARMroots staff every step of the way to ensure that their needs are met.
