Building Green Roofs

See, touch and learn about the structural components of green roofs, soil medium and plants. Get hands on experience installing a demonstration green roof. Learn about the benefits of green roofs, best practices, and native plants.

Participants will install the greenroof components, soil medium and plants on a shed in a community garden in Park Slope Brooklyn. This is a physical activity that will include bending and lifting. Wear gardening clothes and closed shoes. Gloves will be provided.

This afternoon workshop is led by Marni Majorelle, founder of Alive Structures, a greenroof & eco-design company with a focus on restoring native habitat, and Tom Twente of GrowNYC, who helps neighborhood groups design and build community gardens, parks, and playgrounds.

Here's what exhibitors had to say about last year's event:

"I wanted to let you know that I thought the Green Brooklyn event was very much worth our while. I had terrific traffic and I will be doing lots of follow up. I cannot remember a significant stretch of time during the entire afternoon when there weren't people talking w/me or reading our materials, or signing up to get posters."
- Teresa Ippolito, US Environmental Protection Agency

"Thank you for a great event yesterday! We sold a lot of shoes and the retailer that we teamed up with (Half Pint Citizens) was very happy."
- Chad Valchar, Simple Shoes

"We had a great day... my feet still hurt and my voice is still hoarse!"
- Andrew Deluca, Magic Pest Exterminating
