Wanaqua Family Garden

460-464 E. 136th Street
Mott Haven, Bronx
Founded in 1999

Wanaqua Family Garden sits on a 10,000 square foot lot adjacent to PS 43 Jonas Bronck Elementary School. GrowNYC began site work in 2010, includinghelping gardeners clear the site, fundraising for garden improvements, organizing volunteer days, and providing hands-dirty scientific investigation every Friday to 180 3rd and 4th graders.

Palette Architects contributed pro-bono design work, which was submitted to community gardeners and the school in order to create a mutually agreed upon design. There are currently 20 large community vegetable beds, plus a sizable children's garden, with many additions to come in 2011.

This garden is under the jurisdiction of NYC Parks and supported by GreenThumb, the nation's largest urban gardening program. If you are interested in joining, starting, or supporting a community garden, contact NYC Parks GreenThumb
