Start a Compost System at Your School

Learn about different outdoor and indoor compost systems, ways to incorporate composting into curriculum, and resources available for school administrators, teachers, and parent volunteers. There is a $5 workshop fee and registration is required. Visit NYCWasteLess to find more workshops from the NYC Compost Project.

Recycle, Now More Than Ever!  Discussion and Film Screening
6:30pm-8:30pm, NYCDEP's Newtown Creek Visitor Center

See the “garbage villages” in Cairo, where residents take it upon themselves to clean the city and make recycling their sole source of income, then journey to the US to examine how patterns of consumption and waste changed post WWII.   Movies will be followed by a workshop where you will learn how to recycle more than 50% of your household waste in NYC.  The films Garbage Dreams (excerpt) and Gone Tomorrow: the Hidden Life of Garbage will be followed by a presentation by GrowNYC's Office of Recycling Outreach and Education.  Download the flyer for directions.

Fixers Collective

Malfunctioning lamps, fans, gadgets and other objects may find salvation with this group of "Master Fixers".  The Fixers Collective hosts regular fixing sessions where people bring broken items to be assessed and potentially repaired or creatively repurposed.  They can even find a new home for stuff with a story through the Object Ethnography Project.  Keep up with the Fixers and their schedule of workshops at www.fixerscollective.org.
