Your Recycling Questions, Answered

“The Local” for Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill, an online collaboration between The New York Times and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, recently took recycling questions for OROE’s Recycling Outreach Coordinator for Brooklyn, Jae Watkins. Even if you don’t live in the community you’ll find many of Jae’s answers enlightening.

Recycling Expansion Proposed for NYC
The New York City Council recently proposed 11 pieces of legislation to expand recyclable materials and recycling programs, increase enforcement and outreach and conduct additional studies. At this time, no laws have been passed or changes implemented. Stay tuned to OROE’s e-newsletter for information on any updates to NYC’s recycling program.

Whole Foods Adds Cork Recycling Program
If you are among those who can’t bear to trash natural cork stoppers from wine bottles, you may be interested to know about this recycling opportunity. Wine stoppers made of cork (no synthetic plastic stoppers or metal caps) can be dropped off at any Whole Foods market in NYC to be recycled into a variety of products by Jelinek Cork Group. These stores will also take #5 plastic containers and Brita pitcher filters for recycling through Preserve’s Gimme 5 program.

NYU Wagner School of Public Service, 295 Lafayette Street

On Roosevelt Island—located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens—there are no garbage bags on the sidewalks and no garbage trucks. Instead, refuse is collected from its 14,000 inhabitants via a retro-futuristic system of underground tubes. An exhibition on the island features maps, photographs, videos and more. On May 6, a symposium will explore the role of garbage collection in a dense urban environment.

Co-op and Apartment Building Composting Programs
Wednesday, May 26, 6pm-8pm
Thomson Reuters Building, 3 Times Square (corner of W42nd St & 7th Ave), 22nd floor

This workshop is for experienced home composters who are interested in expanding their individual composting efforts to a cooperative composting project with other residents in their buildings. Learn how to plan out a co-op size compost program, present the project to your board and cooperate with your neighbors for odor and pest-free composting. There will be testimonials and photo examples from current composting co-ops. Registration is required. Workshop fee $5 per person, cash only. Hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center.

GrowNYC's OFFICE OF RECYCLING OUTREACH & EDUCATION (OROE) works to improve the City's recycling rate by educating residents about recycling and waste prevention, and working with landlords to make sure building recycling programs are adequate. Our free services include apartment building recycling audits, trainings for tenants and supers, community events centered on education and special collection programs for textiles, electronics, and compost. OROE's current intensive efforts target one-quarter of New York City's residents. Our five borough-wide coordinators work on a community-by-community basis to identify and address the specific challenges to recycling within a Community District. For more information visit www.grownyc.org or call 212-788-7964.
