In November 2009 GrowNYC expanded its recycling efforts at select Greenmarket locations by adding collection boxes for rechargeable batteries and cell phones. GrowNYC established this recycling program in cooperation with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Cooperation (RBRC), a nonprofit public service organization that operates the Call2Recycle program.

Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, cordless power tools, two-way radios, camcorders, digital cameras, and a variety of other portable electronic products. When the battery can no longer hold a charge, it can and should be recycled.  In fact, with the implementation of Local Law 97 of 2005, it has been illegal for NYC residents to discard rechargeable batteries in the trash since December 2006. 

If it's rechargeable, it's recyclable!  The following battery chemistries can be recycled: Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn), Small Sealed Lead* (Pb) and All Cellphones.  [No alkaline, lithium, non-rechargeable or wet-cell batteries.]
