
SCHOOL RECYCLING GETS A BOOST! Every Classroom in All Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island Public Schools Receives a Paper Recycling Bin thanks to Pratt Industries

Today, Pratt Industries and GrowNYC announced a donation of 40,000 brand new paper recycling bins donated by Pratt Industries for all 700 NYC public school buildings in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island – one for every classroom. The bins are part of GrowNYC’s Recycling Champions program, which to-date has helped 17 schools establish lasting, school-wide recycling programs.
Greenmarket Responds to Damage Caused by Tropical Storm Irene

The Black Dirt region is still flooded, Sullivan County and Ulster County have seen significant damage, and there are parts of Greene County that no longer exist.

Each year, the average New Yorker throws nearly 50 pounds of textiles such as old clothing, towels and shoes in the household trash. That adds up to almost 360 million pounds each year citywide. GrowNYC is providing a solution for New Yorkers to reduce that waste: weekly textile recycling collections at 8 of its year-round Greenmarkets have prevented 1,000,000 lbs and counting from hitting area landfills.

Quinn and non-profit GrowNYC, joined by Ron Bergamini of Action Carting, announce the launch of a pilot program to provide composting services to NYC residents at 6 new Greenmarket locations. Responding to an increasing demand for more drop-off locations, shoppers can now drop off fruit and vegetable scraps at a total of 10 GrowNYC Greenmarkets where they will be transported to a compost facility and turned into fertile soil amendment for local farming projects and other uses.
