Bronx Community and Cultural Garden

401 E. 143rd St./378-382 Willis Ave.
Melrose, Bronx

This 1000 gallon rain water harvesting system in the Bronx collects from the 1776 square foot roof of a neighboring church. Two residential buildings used to inhabit this land but because they were not maintained, they were forced to be torn down. For years, this plot of land was an abandoned lot until New York Restoration Project helped revitalize it and turn it into a community garden. Currently, Frankie, a gardener at BCC, tends not only to the plants but also the chickens and rabbits present in the garden. The vegetables grown and the eggs hatched here are given to the community and its gardeners.
