West 104th Street Garden

6-10 W. 104th Street
Upper West Side, Manhattan

Rainwater is collected from the roof of the adjacent 1000 square foot 5 story building and stored in a 1000 gallon green polyethylene tank located on an 10 inch high platform made of 4 X 4’s placed on gravel bed adjacent to the building. The system uses a Rainkeeper Downspout Filter to filter the rainwater. Overflow is piped to an adjacent perennial area of the garden. The system was built with the assistance of Green Apple Corps members and community gardeners under the supervision of GrowNYC staff. Based on an average rainfall of 34 inches during the season from March 1 to Oct 31 and .5 gallons of rain collected per square foot of roof area, we estimate having the potential to collect 17000 gallons for the season from 1000 sq ft of roof collecting area.
