This 120 square foot galvanized steel roof and wood shade structure was built as an addition to an existing 120 ft garden shed. The combined 240 sq ft roof serves as the rainwater collection area. The roof of the shade structure pitches to the shed roof where rainwater is collected in a custom made gutter and then joins the water flowing from the opposite roof and is funneled to the storage tank. The water is stored in a green polyethylene 343 gallon tank located on an 14 inch high platform made of 4 X 4’s placed on gravel bed adjacent to the garden shed. The overflow is directed underground into a lawn area. Rainwater is filtered using a Rainkeeper Downspout Collection Filter. The system was built with the assistance of GrowNYC interns and volunteers under the supervision of GrowNYC staff. Based on an average rainfall of 34 inches during the season from March 1 to Oct 31 and .5 gallons of rain collected per square foot of roof area, we estimate having the potential to collect 4080 gallons for the season from 240 sq ft of roof collecting area.
