This 100 square foot galvanized steel roof and wood shade structure was built as an addition to an existing 144 ft shade structure. The combined 244 sq ft roof serves as the rainwater collection area. The water is stored in a green polyethylene 343 gallon tank. The overflow is directed into a low lying planted area. Rainwater is filtered using a Rainkeeper Downspout Collection Filter. The system was built with the assistance of Green Apple Corps members and volunteers under the supervision of GrowNYC staff. Based on an average rainfall of 34 inches during the season from March 1 to Oct 31 and .5 gallons of rain collected per square foot of roof area, we estimate having the potential to collect 4148 gallons for the season from 244 sq ft of roof collecting area.
