El Flamboyan

El Flamboyan

592 Tinton Avenue corner of Tinton Ave & E 150 Street
Bronx

Rainwater is collected from the roof of an existing 350 square foot casita and covered deck and stored in a 343 gallon green polyethylene tank located on a 10 inch high platform made of 4 X 4’s placed on a gravel base adjacent to the shed. Rainwater is filtered using a 4 gallon capacity roof washer with a valve for emptying after each rainfall event. The overflow is directed to an adjacent low lying area of the garden. This system was built by El Flamboyan gardeners and Green Apple Corps members under the supervision of GrowNYC staff. Based on an average rainfall of 34 inches during the season from March 1 to Oct 31 and .5 gallons of rain collected per square foot of roof area, we estimate having the potential to collect 5950 gallons for the season from 350 sq ft of roof collecting area.
