Sunshine Garden

Sunshine Garden

99-100 McKibben Street
Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Sunshine Garden has been serving its community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for 17 years. Its 500 gallon tank collects from a 500 square foot roof of a neighboring house. The grape vines covering the tank and the large peach tree over it makes the tank almost invisible to outsiders. Perforated holes in the overflow pipe allow water to slowly trickle out into the garden below it. Plots in the garden are maintained by the community. They find it more convenient to use the tank in the garden instead of the hydrant outside. There is no need for long lengths of hose. John Santos, a gardener at Sunshine is seen here with the rain water harvesting system.

Inclement weather in the city or in the greater region does affect markets;  markets may close early, or snow-bound farmers may not be able to make it into the city.
