All People's Garden

293-295 East 3rd Street
East Village, Manhattan
Founded in 1978

This garden was created in 1978 by former VISTA volunteer Olean For in an effort to unite her block against heavy drug trafficking in her neighborhood. Olean turned around the lives of many youth with her Boys and Girls club.

All People's Garden was GrowNYC's first Plant-A-Lot (PAL) site to open in 1979 with Liz Christy and Mayor Ed Koch planting a ceremonial rose bush to grow over the garden gate. With a generous grant from Evan Frankel Foundation, PAL completed a garden renovation in 2003. Original garden elements were restored including, the stage-seating area, open plaza, bbq patio, tool shed, and pathways with new brick pavers. A new mural and gazebo were added.

This week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced New York State's investment of $15 million in the construction of a new Greenmarket Regional Food Hub in the Bronx. The hub, which will be used by GrowNYC's Greenmarket Co. program, will be a state-of-the-art 120,000 square foot facility that will greatly increase New Yorkers' access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer.

  • Greenmarket

Our network of farmers markets, Youthmarkets, Fresh Food Box pick-ups, and Greenmarket Co. ensures that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, healthiest local food.

  • Recycle

We blanket the five boroughs with resources like textile and food scrap collection, Stop 'N' Swaps, and free training to make waste reduction easy for all.

  • Garden

We build and rejuvenate community & school gardens in all 5 boroughs, and support even more gardens through volunteer days, technical assistance, school garden grants, & more.

  • Teach

We foster future environmental stewards by providing 60,000 children each year with programs that provide meaningful interactions with the natural environment.
