Located inside the Bronx Botanical Garden near Tulip Tree Allee at the Mosholu Gate entrance, admission to NYBG is free Wednesdays, so visitors, employees, and community residents have access to the beautiful grounds while they shop for farm-fresh produce.  Shop the bounty of seasonal vegetables, orchard fruits and berries picked at their peak of ripeness, a wide selection of fragrant herbs, cider, homemade pies, breads and more. Family friendly activities featuring edible gardening, cooking demonstrations and more are planned in conjunction with the NYBG’s educational programming.

Take home some tips from the NYC Compost Project on how to recycle food scraps into nutritious garden soil. Compost bins will also be available for sale.

Good nutrition and exercise are essential to your family’s health.  Every second Wednesday, the Healthy Families Program will teach you how easy it is to lead a heart healthy lifestyle.

Fitness and the Food Pyramid

St. Barnabas Hospital health educators focus on fitness and the food pyramid; free blood pressure and body mass index screenings are also offered.

Nutrition Tips for Fun Healthy Families

An Albert Einstein College of Medicine lead nutritionist conducting the “Fun Healthy Families” project, a year-long research study, offers weight control services for families. At the interactive learning station, determine how much sugar is in a typical beverage and what constitutes adequate portions.

Healthy Choices and Safe Food Preparation

Cornell University Cooperative Extension staff present safe guidelines for cleaning fruits and vegetables in preparation for a healthy meal.

Manager

Sonali Shukla grew up in New Jersey and has spent the last 9 years in Manhattan. With her degrees in the Earth Sciences, Sonali has a keen interest in preserving both natural and agricultural land, especially in the beautiful region surrounding NYC. Since our local farmers have a similar vested interest in responsibly maintaining the land, Sonali has made it her mission to learn as much as possible about the local food scene. She has volunteered her time to the 78th St. Greenmarket and GrowNYC since March 2010. Sonali is now joining the ranks of the esteemed GrowNYC Market Managers to continue her education in local agriculture and help connect people to the good food that keeps them happy and healthy.
