Anastasia Petrie moved to New York from the Pacific Northwest, trading mountains for skyscrapers in 2005. Adjusting to the customs of her new home was no small task but the thing she pined for above all else was fresh tomatoes, hot from the summer sun picked from her home garden. Her quest for fresh produce turned into an obsession leading her eventually to Greenmarket where she revels in the bounty of beautiful New York produce and the joy of sharing it with her neighbors. |

David Sherman was exposed to farm work and the need for a more sustainable food system at Quail Hill Farm in Montauk. Since then he has received an organic farming certificate while working for a women's farm coop in Costa Rica, lived in South India, and spent two seasons as assistant farm manager, raising veggies, running a CSA and farm workshops for Somalian refugees at DeLaney Community Farm for Denver urban Gardens. Despite his bounty of fresh veggies, David couldn't find a decent slice, knish, or bagel so he headed back East. When David is not presiding over the BKBH Greenmarket he keeps busy cooking, making music, and DJing. |

This market is open every Thursday and every Sunday all year round. It serves a diverse population including Columbia University students, faculty and staff, St Luke’s Hospital staff, visitors and patients and upper west side residents. Several of the farmers attend both days but each day has its own distinct character. Thursday’s market thrives on the hustle and bustle on the work and school day schedule with busy times and slower times and many products which can be purchased quickly and carried to school, work or home. On hand are milk, fruits, cider, farm baked treats, preserved fruits and vegetables, eggs, cheese, smoked meats, pickled vegetables, maple syrup, honey, focaccia topped with locally sourced fruit, vegetables, herbs and cheeses (which are a favorite at lunch time). From April to November, Hodgson’s farm joins the market bringing a big selection of plants and some of the best fruits and vegetables around. We have also added grass-fed meats and honey to Thursdays this year. Sundays have a more laid back feel but folks come to do their serious shopping. Samascotts, Stannards, Beth’s Farm Kitchen and Meredith’s Bakery all return for the 2nd day. They are joined by Pura Vida who brings the freshest fish available anywhere, Milk Thistle Farm’s incomparable organic milk, cream and chocolate milk, and Ardith Mae Farm who provides the only local goat cheese north of 14th st! David Rowley of Monkshood Nursery supplies us with certified organic greens from his greenhouse and a selection of vegetables including the world's best cherry tomatoes. In the summer, Gonzalez Farm provides greens, staple vegetables and some specialty produce. |

Allison Whaley grew up in Kentucky, surrounded by tobacco fields and horse farms, where she used to sneak onto neighboring plantations to play in musty barns (and was shot at only once).Growing up, farmers markets were the norm. After teaching organic gardening skills as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South America, Allison moved to the Big Apple, baffling friends and family by landing a job that fuses her nostalgic Kentucky past with her Peace Corps experiences. Find Allison in one of her Brooklyn Greenmarkets, and you’ll find a girl who could not be happier. |
