We’ve Got Milk (and Much, Much More): June Is Dairy Month at Union Square

Join us for special events as we celebrate our many delicious dairy products with cooking demonstrations, instructional discussions, free recipes, and, best of all, free samples. We'll honor all the dairy delights and wonders that are cows, goats, and sheep! And be sure not to miss Wednesday, June 25th Greenmarket Dairy Day, a super-sized day of fun where we fete and taste dairy favorites, including farmstead cheeses, chocolate milk, and gelato. Click here for more delicious dairy details.

Summer Solstice: Let the Harvest Begin!

The longest day of the year is here! And while June 20th actually marks the start of shorter days, it also marks the first day of summer and beginning of peak harvest season at every Greenmarket. All your favorite crops are, well, cropping up - cherries, berries, summer squash and more await your plate. And each day brings newly harvested delights of summer. Celebrate with a shopping excursion to your local Greenmarket, and cook up a solstice feast with friends.

Awww, Shucks: Peas, If You Please

Appease your appetite for fresh peas at the Greenmarket. A hallmark of spring and early summer, we’ve got the most pleasing peas in town! Forget frozen. Abandon canned. For the fullest flavor, just-picked peas can’t be beat. Snap, snow, or sweet -- there’s a particular pea that’s sure to pleasure your palate. Taste these natural delights at a Greenmarket near you.

Play It Safe with Local Tomatoes

Tomato season isn’t in full effect at the Greenmarkets yet, but shoppers should know that local tomatoes are safe to consume. According to New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, the Empire State's tasty tomatoes have not been linked to the recent salmonellosis outbreak. Greenhouse tomatoes are available from select Greenmarket growers, and you can safely enjoy them until the field harvest kicks in!

Calling all shutterbugs: The Greenmarket wants your best photos.  Submit your pics of the action in any of our famous markets –– the farmers, the shoppers, the produce, the flowers –– and we’ll publish the best of the bunch in our printed materials. Photos must be original, at least 300 dpi, and include a brief description of the farm stand name or market name and date. Email photos to us at sound13dint@photos.flickr.com with the subject line ‘Greenmarket Photo Contest.’

Pardon Our Appearance: Union Square Renovations Underway!

Union Square Park is getting a makeover, but our world-famous Union Square Greenmarket is still open for business on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Farm stands on the west side of Union Square remain in their usual locations, while the producers you would typically find on the park's north side have shifted south along 14th Street. Same great farmers, same great food -- just a few steps away.  So, keep supporting Union Square's farmers by shopping there while the Parks Department does its stuff.

Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve with Our New Greenmarket Gear

You love to shop at the Greenmarkets –– so show your shopper pride with some Greenmarket gear. Great gifts for you and the foodies in your life, merchandise includes aprons, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and tank tops as well as stuff for lil’ sprout shoppers (bibs and more!).  Click here to be the first in your building to sport Greenmarket gear, and help support your favorite farmers.

A Farmer Speaks: What's Wrong with the New Farm Bill

Sick of corn being king? Well, farmers who want to grow sustainable, seasonal crops are not only losing their subsidies -- they're being penalized. Read all about one farmer's unfortunate plight and then pick up the phone and tell your local politicians what you think of these flawed policies ... before it's too late and corn is coronated forevermore.  Read The New York Times editorial "My Forbidden Fruits (and Vegetables)" by farmer Jack Hedin.
