Randall’s Island Urban Farm just completed its third year of educational programming for NYC public school and summer camp students. Over this past year, the one acre farm hosted 45 groups totaling about 1,500 students. Working in partnership with Randall’s Island Park Alliance, the experiential and educational program engages students in hands-on stewardship of the land and integrates academic curricula into the garden experience.
Students learn about where their food comes from, how to grow it, how to prepare a healthy snack, and how to care for egg laying hens. Healthy eating is encouraged throughout the program which includes using exercise to make a healthy beverage in the bicycle-powered blender. Also this year, with help from Disney VoluntEARS and others, the farm includes 8,000 square feet of additional space, two additional rice paddies, a brick patio, hanging gutter planters, an outdoor kitchen, a chicken coop, and 28 garden beds. This past year’s response to programming was so enthusiastic that we have a waiting list of 180 schools! We are proud of this and are working diligently to address this demand in the coming year.
