Every year more and more consumers are getting savvy to the environmental, economic, and health benefits of buying and eating local foods. In addition to farmers markets, New Yorkers throughout the city want expanded access to healthy, local farm products at retail stores, restaurants, institutions, and other traditional wholesale channels.
That’s why in June of 2012 GrowNYC launched Greenmarket Co., NYC’s first and only local food hub and distribution service. Greenmarket Co. purchases farm products from local producers at a fair price, aggregates client orders in a refrigerated warehouse facility, and makes deliveries to wholesale clients throughout the city including restaurants, retailers, institutions, and GrowNYC’s own food access programs, Youthmarket and the Fresh Food Box.
Our participating farmers are highly diverse in size and scope, ranging from 300-acre third-generation vegetable farmers, to small organic cooperatives, to hydroponic and aquaponic growers, to grain farmers and local millers. These producers are eager to take advantage of the business opportunities available to them in NYC, but may not be able to serve individual wholesale buyers in a way that is efficient and profitable for them. In the 2012-2013 season, we purchased more than $380,000 in farm products from local producers. By taking over the sale and distribution of their products, we allow our local farmers to focus more on what they love: growing the freshest, most sustainable food regionally.
Greenmarket Co. helps provide access to local foods, ensuring that New Yorkers all over the city can find these products at restaurants, grocery stores, bodegas, senior centers, and schools near them. For the most underserved communities, those that lack access to fresh produce outlets and have high rates of diet related illness, Greenmarket Co. powers GrowNYC’s food access programs, Youthmarket and the Fresh Food Box, which provide high-need neighborhoods with a source of fresh, healthy, affordable food.
