In addition to GrowNYC’s regular programming, we also host a varity of annual events that help us raise funds, awareness or both and we hope contribute to the fabric of sustainable community that we are helping to build in New York City.

New Green City

In October, GrowNYC hosted the 8th annual New Green City fair at Union Square. 40,000 New Yorkers participated in a full-day fair featuring popup courses by Education partner The New School, a nutrition puppet show by Super Sprowtz and exhibits highlighting green services and efforts by nonprofit organizations, government agencies, local businesses and neighbors.

A Toast to Our Town

This year’s Toast to Our Town on June 3 at Gotham Bar and Grill honored GreenThumb’s Edie Stone, Joel Marcus of Alexandria Real Estate Equities and Actor Oliver Platt.  The intimate benefit featured the best of the season’s bounty prepared by prominent chefs Alfred Portale, Alexandra Guarnaschelli, Harold Dieterle and Marc Forgione , live music by the Dewdrop Society and entertainment including Calvin Trillin.   See images HERE.

Big Apple Crunch

Screen-shot-2013-01-30-at-1.41.07-PMAs part of National Food Day, on October 24, GrowNYC co-hosted the Big Apple Crunch with the City of New York. The Big Apple Crunch set a world record for the “most participants in an apple-crunching event.” RecordSetter.com, a NYC-based organization tracking new world records, charted NYC’s progress towards setting the record! Joined by NYC Department of Education Chancellor Dennis Walcott, the Big Apple Crunch celebrates food and gets New Yorkers thinking about healthy, seasonal eating. Greenmarkets and Youthmarkets across the City were hosting crunches and giving away free apples and schools, businesses, senior centers and nonprofits organized Crunches across the City. More than 200,000 Crunches took place!
